Label TextHere, an ordinary day is transformed into a moving portrait through Sedrick Huckaby’s energetic draftsmanship. At home, seated in her wheelchair, is Huckaby’s maternal grandmother, Hallie Beatrice Carpenter, affectionately called “Big Momma.” This work is part of a series of drawings and paintings Huckaby made during the final years of Big Momma’s life. Relatives and neighbors are the subjects of the artist’s portraits, which highlight family, faith, and community. Since 2010, Huckaby has converted Big Momma’s house in Fort Worth’s Polytechnic (Poly) Heights neighborhood into Kinfolk House—a creative project space that serves as a gallery, community facility, and education center.
