Light glints off the surfaces in this still life, from the glistening white grapes at left to the shiny red apple at center and the glazes of the earthenware pot behind it. Meanwhile, the partially peeled lemons and cracked walnuts suggest that someone has enjoyed the treats on offer for more than just their visual appeal.

The painter of this still life, Charles Ethan Porter, was an African American artist, who was one of the first artists of color to exhibit at New York’s National Academy of Design, where he studied after leaving his native Connecticut. This painting was created just before Porter went to Paris for further study.
