The powerful, vertical sweep of barren trees catches the viewer’s attention in this small evocation of a November day, while the patches of earth tones amongst the grass reveal the changing seasons and encroach of winter. New York painter Dubois Hasbrouck became acclaimed for scenes like this, which depicted the passages of the seasons through their concentration on atmospheric effects and overall stillness.
