Label TextThe realism and detail of this bronze sculpture seem to indicate an animal observed in the wild. Yet Henry M. Shrady modeled his statue—and indeed, many of his other subjects—on studies of animals in the Bronx Zoo. By emphasizing his moose’s proud stance and alert expression, Shrady liberates the creature from captivity, creating a powerful impression of animal beauty and grace. A large-scale version of this composition made its debut at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. This smaller bronze was a popular addition to early twentieth century American domestic environments.
