The dynamic postures of these two small sculptures capture the viewer’s attention. The voluminous skirts’ elaborate folds also provide rhythm and movement for the eye, while the rough, cast bronze surfaces suggest the fabric’s texture.
A celebrated sculptor at the turn of the twentieth century, Bessie Potter Vonnoh enjoyed popularity among Gilded Age collectors for her depictions of women in a variety of exuberant poses, such as these. Later in her career, she also designed large-scale fountains and statuary.
