A study of an introspective young woman, this portrait is also an excercise in texture and marking, from the plain wall behind the sitter to the shadows on her cheekbones and eyes. Raphael Soyer was a member of a family of artists who emigrated to the United States from Russia. With his brothers, he documented both the world of New York’s working-class Lower East Side, as well as the city’s growing Jewish middle class. He was also a popular teacher at various art schools, including the Art Students League in Manhattan.
