GeographyDescriptionBlack-topped red ware globular jar.Label TextThe earliest Predynastic pottery was made with red clay from the Nile River valley, and like all pottery from this period, the vessels were fashioned by hand. Potters created the blackened surface on the upper parts of these vessels by placing them upside down in ash in the kiln. This process prevented the upper part of the pot from oxidizing, and thus turning red like the vessel’s body, during firing.
