Label TextLarry Bell is best known for his Minimalist sculptures and installations that use glass to explore light and perception; this work demonstrates similar pursuits but in two dimensions. The Double X is part of the artist’s Mirage Works series, which derives its name from the optical phenomenon that creates a mirage: when heat refracts light rays, displacing the appearance of an object in space. To achieve the mirage-like illusion of The Double X, Bell collaged reflective materials such as Mylar and other foil-coated films, which he had experimented with vaporizing, alongside nonmetallic materials, creating what appears to be a painting.
