Roberto Montenegro was a Mexican muralist, illustrator, painter, and curator of Mexican popular art who is considered to be a founder of the Mexican muralist movement. In People of Tehuantepec, Montenegro depicts three young women and a young man from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a region of Mexico recognized as the center of the Zapotec community. This work conveys the artist’s appreciation for Indigenous Mexican aesthetics, albeit through an idealized perspective. Montenegro was commissioned to create this work for the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education.


Roberto Montenegro fue un muralista, ilustrador, pintor y curador de arte popular, que es considerado como uno de los fundadores del movimiento muralista en México. En Gente de Tehuantepec, Montenegro representa a tres mujeres jóvenes y un joven del Istmo de Tehuantepec, una región de México reconocida como el centro de la comunidad zapoteca. Esta obra transmite el aprecio del artista por la estética Indígena de México, aunque viene de una perspectiva idealizada. Montenegro recibió el encargo de realizar esta obra para la Secretaría de Educación Pública de México.
