David Alfaro Siqueiros was one of “Los Tres Grandes” (“the three great ones”) of Mexican muralism, along with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. His commitment to Marxist-Leninist ideology had a tremendous influence on his work, as evidenced by the themes of human struggle that he frequently conveyed in his murals, paintings, and prints. In El Grito, Siqueiros invokes a sense of anguish coming from the subject of the painting, indicated by their open mouth, furrowed brow, and the pained expression in their eyes.
