Juanito is one of several dozen paintings that San Antonio artist Adan Hernandez made for the 1993 film Blood In, Blood Out. The movie focuses on the lives of three Chicano relatives in East Los Angeles who become involved in a street gang. In the film, Hernandez’s paintings are presented as the work of Cruz Candelaria, an artist played by actor (and fellow San Antonian) Jesse Borrego. The portrait depicts a smiling Juanito, Cruz’s younger brother who tragically dies of an accidental heroin overdose. Hernandez’s paintings for the film are credited with drawing greater attention to the work of Chicano artists at a time when few had received broad recognition.
