Label Text
Although titled Round 10, this fighter appears to have evaded every blow. Vincent Valdez often explores the subject of boxers in his work as symbols of masculinity. They are frequently depicted as everyday heroes—here, underscored by the neighborhood in the background. Valdez, who grew up in San Antonio and is now based in Houston, addresses racial justice in his artwork, and his boxers embody the socio-economic hardships of young men of color. The phrase “collector’s item” implicates the exploitation of this prizefighter for others’ monetary gain.
