Label TextThe tondo, or circular painting, became a popular format for devotional images in the private quarters of wealthy families’ houses in Renaissance Florence. Like this one, many depict the Christ Child with the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. This painting has recently been attributed to Bastiano Mainardi, brother-in-law of the prominent Florentine painter Domenico Ghirlandaio and a member of the Ghirlandaio family’s workshop. Samuel H. Kress, a self-made department store magnate, acquired The Holy Family in Italy in 1930. Kress shared his love of European art by distributing works from his vast collection to museums around the country. (J. Powers, 2021)
