DescriptionA large painting of a landscape and cloudy sky seen through the bars of a wrought iron gate that is ajar. The silhouette of a man appears on the other side of the gate and his form is echoed in a topiary-like form to the right and other trees in the distance.Label TextThe Everyman, which Derek Boshier has described as the “cog in the wheel, the amorphous us,” and a theme that featured in his earlier works, resurfaces in this painting. Boshier produced Politigate while teaching at the University of Houston (1980–93). The artist returned to painting at that time, after thirteen years of working in photography and sculpture.
In London in the 1960s, Boshier became associated with the British Pop art movement, embracing the iconography of British and American mass culture. The artist’s graphic work has been featured on albums by the Clash and David Bowie.
