Label Text
Hollywood screen siren Pola Negri, in a stunning emerald gown and matching fur-trimmed wrap, meets her audience with a self-assured gaze in this glamorous portrait. Negri starred in more than sixty movies, among them the popular silent films Forbidden Paradise (1924) and Hotel Imperial (1927). She was equally famous for her life off-screen, including two marriages and romances with Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino. Negri retired to San Antonio with her close friend Margaret West in 1957. On her death in 1987, Negri left much of her estate to Saint Mary’s University and Trinity University and bequeathed several paintings to the Museum. (J. Powers, 2021)
