This burly man proudly displays a trio of tattoos. The title, “man who likes women,” remarks on his display of affection for three types of women—a “good girl,” a “bad girl,” and the Virgin of Guadalupe. Born in Laredo, Texas, César A. Martínez moved to San Antonio in the early 1970s and has been a leading figure in the Chicano Art Movement since then. Drawing upon his memories growing up during the 1940s and ’50s, his figures are composites of types of people from the Chicano community.
Este hombre fornido muestra orgullosamente tres tatuajes. El título de la obra es un comentario sobre sus muestras de afecto a tres tipos de mujeres, “la niña buena”, “la niña mala” y la Virgen de Guadalupe. Nacido en Laredo Texas, César A. Martínez se mudó a San Antonio a principios de los años setenta y ha sido una figura líder en el movimiento artístico chicano desde entonces. Basándose en los recuerdos de su niñez durante las décadas de 1940 y 1950, sus figuras son composiciones de diferentes tipos de personas de la comunidad chicana.
