Label TextIn addition to the dragon painting on view in this gallery, this jar is another example of the popularity of the dragon image during the Joseon dynasty. The divine energy of this four-clawed dragon is visible through its large bulging eyes, flying whiskers and mane, gaping mouth, twisted body, and a striding pose. The dragon is surrounded by stylized clouds as it chases a flaming pearl. The cobalt-blue pigment used for the design seen here was an expensive material in Joseon Korea. This finely crafted jar was probably used as a flower vase in official court ceremonies.
