Pictured here against a luxurious backdrop of brocade patterning and drapery is Sandra Payne, an artist and librarian Rodríguez-Díaz met at a Brooklyn art opening. Although the portrait is not outdoors, flora is a prominent motif. The work’s title, ‘La Primavera’, meaning spring, invokes Botticelli’s fifteenth-century painting of the same name, which depicts an allegorical scene from classical mythology with Venus as the central figure. This time, the goddess is clothed, presiding over a flourishing garden and grove.

Unlike Botticelli’s women who bear similar expressionless appearances, Payne is pictured smiling—exuding confidence, warmth, and strength. Rodríguez-Díaz’s variation in each sitter’s countenance and posture challenge the idealized “type” in traditional depictions of the female nude.


Frente a un lujoso fondo de patrones brocados y cortinas podemos ver aquí representada a Sandra Payne, una artista y bibliotecaria que Rodríguez-Díaz conoció en la inauguración de una exposición. Aunque el retrato no es en exteriores, las flores son un adorno prominente. El título de la obra, ‘La primavera’, hace referencia a la obra del siglo XV de Botticelli del mismo nombre, la cual muestra una escena alegórica de la mitología clásica con Venus como la figura central. Esta vez, la diosa está vestida, presidiendo sobre un jardín floreciente y una arboleda.

Al contrario de las mujeres en las obras de Botticelli, quienes carecen de expresiones faciales, Payne sonríe, emanando confianza, calor y fuerza. La variación en los rostros de las modelos y su postura que propone Rodríguez-Díaz desafían los modelos arquetípicos idealizados en las representaciones tradicionales del desnudo femenino.
