This painting and The Myth of Venus nearby are two of the three paintings in the Goddess Triptych, a set of paintings by San Antonio artist Ángel Rodríguez-Díaz that celebrates the beauty, confidence, and power of women of color. These women are modern-day goddesses, whose forms evoke some of the earliest iconic sculptures made in Western Europe. The combination of contemporary observation and art historical references are part of the artist’s rich stylistic mixture.

Ángel Rodríguez-Díaz was born in Puerto Rico, where he first studied painting before moving to New York to pursue graduate work at New York University and Hunter College. He has been living and working in San Antonio since 1995. Besides painting, he has also created sculpture, such as the metal obelisk Beacon at the intersection of Blanco Road and Fulton Street in the Alta Vista neighborhood.
