Label TextAn atmosphere of tranquility and peace marks this intimate scene of a river valley. A lone fisherman tries his luck in the river, while a rowboat sets sail, all surrounded by the lush greenery of the mountain setting. The scene was probably painted on-site near Conway, New Hampshire, where George Inness worked during the middle of the 1870s.
Throughout his long career, Inness responded strongly to the locations where he worked, both in Europe and America, paying close attention to the effects of light, shadow, and the environment to suggest not only the physical characteristics of a place, but his emotional response to it as well.
