Label Text
Indicative of painting practices from the Desert region, this work depicts the land from an aerial point of view. As seen here, people are represented by a U-shape, based on the impression left in the dirt when a person sits cross-legged on the ground. This canvas recounts the story of two ancestors who argued after one would not share tobacco with the other. The two men angrily chased each other with stone axes around the trees (indicated here by concentric circles) and ended up spilling the tobacco and splitting each other’s heads. Coming from a family of artists, Andrea Nungarrayi Martin paints her father’s Dreamings, which he passed down to her.
