Label TextThis planar, aerial view and the carefully dotted borders are typical features of paintings by Patrick Mung Mung. The painting depicts the 350-million-year-old Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park, in east Kimberley—as does the adjacent work, by Mung Mung’s wife, Betty Carrington. The banded sandstone domes portrayed in the bottom half of the canvas are the result of layer upon layer of sediment. The artist regularly visited this site with his family as a child.
Mung Mung, son of the late artist George Mung Mung (Gija, ca. 1921–1991), worked as a cattle stockman before beginning painting shortly after his father’s passing, in 1991. A departure from his father’s aesthetic, his work is more abstracted and his palette considerably more varied.
