Label TextThe art of Tiwi body painting with natural ochres for ceremony has been an integral part of Tiwi life for thousands of years and continues to influence contemporary artists. Estelle Munkanome uses traditional ochres in her presentation of Tiwi designs to honor her past and preserve Tiwi culture for generations to come. As seen repeated in this work, the mark of an X inscribed in a square symbolizes the Pukumani death grave in Tiwi art.
