Label TextRendered in a range of tones is the rocky landscape of Phyllis Ningamara’s country in the Kimberley region. A river cuts through the center of the composition and is surrounded by colored stones—a characteristic feature of the land along the river flats. To achieve the subtle shifts in hue, Ningamara modified the natural ochres through a process of burning and then mixed the altered pigments.
Although Ningamara began painting later in life, she is known for her superb skill as a colorist and for her inventive interpretations of her country. She is a highly respected senior woman and cultural leader of the Mirriwoong people.
