This painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe was used as a "calenda," a religious standard carried in procession through the streets of the small Zapotec community of San Antonino. Made by members of the Cornelio family, this standard and others like it were owned by the artists, and rented, annually, to religious brotherhoods ("mayordomias") for use in ceremonies honoring their patron saint. Because of the ephemeral nature of these paintings, they are continually repaired and frequently replaced with new examples. (Dr. Marion Oettinger, 1998)
