DescriptionStone figure. Grey stone, well articulated neckline and nose line suggesting mouth and eyes on pointy head. Arms crossed over belly. Chip on proper left rear of head. Deuse, finely grained material, chipped rear proper left foot.Label TextStone figures from the Rio Balsas region are plentiful and varied. Among the most frequently found are those which are known as Mezcala Style, named for the village near their source. Mezcala Style figures date back to the Late Preclassic period, and many show Olmec influences. Others have been found in a more recent Mexica (Aztec) context, namely in offerings discovered in the Templo Major of Tenochtitlan. Forms range from naturalistic to highly abstract human styles, the latter of which is demonstrated with this object. (Label Text 1998, Dr. Marion Oettinger Jr.)Provenancewith Robert K.
