Label Text
This highly detailed drawing of a branch appears innocuous. However, paired with the text behind it, the branch’s form recalls a more dangerous object. In the creative mind of a kid, a stick can transform into a gun during innocent play. Fernando Andrade’s work is inspired by his childhood in the border town of Acuña, Mexico, and current events. Since Andrade moved to San Antonio at age seven, Acuña has become increasingly unsafe. In this context, a common stick becomes a symbol for the ever-present threat of violence.
