I find myself always needing to learn how to do something new. —Marilyn Lanfear

All the women in Lanfear’s family were seamstresses, except for Lanfear herself who didn’t sew until later in life. Lanfear recalls that her mother would sew clothes for her and her brother, Ben. As a self-portrait, the artist recreated a garment from her childhood based on a photograph of her and Ben wearing matching homemade outfits. The work is part of Lanfear’s Wardobe as Destiny (Paper) series, for which she reinvents fabric clothing in handmade paper, creating surrogate portraits of the garment’s former owner.
