Label TextMy greatest skill is in arranging things. Words, ideas, physical objects. Putting things together. Whether side by side, left or right, or one on top of the other.
—Marilyn Lanfear
The artist collected the found objects assembled here—fragments of architectural details and small cabinets to store jewelry or prized possessions—over a period of many years. In a composition unified by a muted palette, the objects bear witness to the passage of time with scratches, scuffs, and peeling paint suggesting previous use. The title of the work alludes to Lanfear’s grandmother’s smoke house in Navarro, Texas, and offers the setting to an ambiguous narrative.
