Ceramicist Candelario Medrano was best known for his colorful “toys,” which portray small human figures atop fantastical arks, ships, and in churches. These pieces are actually quite delicate and were made for display rather than for play. Medrano was part of a community of celebrated ceramic artists from the town of Santa Cruz de las Huertas; the party boat featured here is an example of another ceramicist from Medrano’s town named Eleuterio Ortega. Ortega’s boat contains the same molding and positioning of his ceramic figures, as well as the same colorways.
Candelario Medrano fue conocido por sus "juguetes" que retratan a pequeñas figuras humanas sobre arcas, barcos e iglesias con formas fantásticas y colores brillantes. Estas obras son delicadas y fueron hechas para exhibirse, más que para jugar con ellas. Medrano formó parte de una comunidad de ceramistas célebres de Santa Cruz de las Huertas; el barco que se incluye en esta muestra es de otro ceramista del mismo pueblo, Eleuterio Ortega. El barco de Ortega tiene el mismo moldeo, posicionamiento de las figuras, y las mismas combinaciones de colores que la obra de Medrano.
