Compared with New Guinea, large-scale wood sculpture in Micronesia was relatively rare. Despite this fact, the technique of the Nukuoro carvers of the Caroline Islands was of the highest quality. Especially striking is the extreme simplicity of the carver's style, which reduces the figure to its essentials. A maximum of expression is here achieved with a minimum of resources, in a way unknown anywhere else in Oceania.
