This coin bank is decorated with the black and red floral designs over a cream-colored slip often seen in Tonalá ceramics. The work’s subject matter, however, is a departure from the genre standards. This object may be a souvenir commemorating Carlota of Mexico, who reigned as Empress Consort of Mexico from 1864 until 1867. Carlota’s influence on Mexican popular culture persisted long after she left the country in 1866, as evidenced by the longevity of the protest song “Adiós a Mamá Carlota.”
