Samurai warriors were highly educated. Even on the battlefield, they needed the means to record events and communicate with others, hence a writing kit was an essential tool. This curved writing box is shaped like a short sword. The top is hinged to swing to the side, revealing a small inkstone, a stick of ink, and a brush.
