Trees of Life are a standard of Mexican popular art. They are typically made of ceramic and branch out from a small central base. They convey any number of themes and activities. Typically made to be candelabras or incense burners, they are thought to have originated in the community of Izúcar de Matamoros, located in the Mexican state of Puebla. The Trees of Life seen here illustrate a variety of scenes, both profane and biblical. The large Tree of Life at the center of this display depicts Adam, Eve, and the serpent in the Garden of Eden.
