Despite minimal training and immense challenges, Annie Snyder became a highly skilled painter. While she never rose to the level of popularity of her male contemporaries, she was, nevertheless, just as capable. As seen here in her meticulous depiction of apples, almonds, and peanuts, she excelled in still lifes. She painstakingly rendered a highly focused profusion of mixed nuts that spill into the foreground as the crumpled bag from which they came lies toppled, as if to suggest we have only just missed the moment in which the overwhelmed sack could stand no more. The shiny surface upon which they lie adds to the illusionistic rendering, as the reflection of the nuts creates a sense of heightened realism. While Snyder succeeds in conveying what seems to be a chance encounter, it is in fact a carefully arranged composition with the apples taking on a pyramidal form, a visual tool employed to create a sense of balance.
