This hat was made for a high Tibetan lama. It is constructed from woven bamboo and lined with red silk damask. The dome is decorated with yellow satin cut in the shape of ruyi, an auspicious motif also found on several garments and porcelains in the galleries. Shou, the Chinese character for longevity, is affixed on each ruyi pattern in contrasting blue. During the Qing dynasty, Tibet and China maintained close religious and political connections. Tibetan lamas lived in Beijing and played roles in the imperial family’s religious lives.
