Label TextAlong the Margaree, Summer in Cape Breton is a peaceful, bucolic Impressionist landscape painted en plein air during one of the summers that Helen DuMond spent with her husband in Nova Scotia where he taught. She captures the lush atmosphere through an array of vivid greens that are balanced by the modeled clouds above. As still and serene as the landscape is, DuMond brings a bit of visual drama to the scene through the bushy trees that stretch their limbs nearly the entire width of the composition, almost overpowering the grazing herd below.
DuMond moved to New York City in her teens to study at the Art Students League, where she met and eventually married long-time instructor Frank DuMond. While her husband garnered greater acclaim and popularity than she in their lifetimes, it was not for a lack of skill or talent on her part, but rather the greater opportunities afforded to men.
