This red satin robe is decorated with roundels formed by butterflies and blossoming branches. Similar images of butterflies and flowers on black grounds are on the sleeve openings and the band encircling the collar and extending across the upper right chest. The hem is embroidered with stylized mountain peaks, dragons, auspicious Buddhist emblems, and waves.
This robe represents a new fashion. Wide cuff openings appeared during the reign of emperor Daoguang (1820-1850). The Palace Museum in Beijing has a very similar robe which entered the imperial wardrobe in 1841.
