This magnificent robe was made from imperial Chinese silk brocade and tailored in Tibet for a lama or an aristocrat. It has a small neck opening, fitted sleeves, and a wide hem. A powerful, gold five-clawed dragon chases a flaming pearl, flying through the clouds above sea waves and mountain peaks. Luxury textiles served an important role in Chinese diplomatic and trade relationships. Chinese imperial rulers tried to keep a stable relationship with powerful Tibetan Buddhist elites for over a millennium. The wearer of this robe must have impressed bystanders with his striking appearance.
