Cartonería is the art of making papier-mâché sculptures; it has been a cornerstone of Mexican popular art since the sixteenth century. Alebrijes are a more recent type of cartonería characterized by sculptures of fantastic animals painted in bright colors. These figures were originated by cartonero Pedro Linares in the 1930s.

La cartonería es una técnica con la que se crean figuras a través de un proceso de modelar papel maché. Esta práctica ha sido parte del canon del arte popular mexicano desde el siglo XVI. Los alebrijes son un tipo de cartonería originada por el cartonero Pedro Linares en la década de 1930, definidos como esculturas de animales fantásticos pintados en colores brillantes.
