The soft, translucent colors in Richard Diebenkorn’s painting evoke the sandy beaches, golden sunlight, and blue waters of Ocean Park, a community where the artist lived in Santa Monica, California. One in a series of 145 paintings completed over twenty years, Ocean Park, No. 53 transforms the landscape into an abstract exploration of color, line, form, and light. Diebenkorn worked out compositions directly on the canvas through trial and error, scraping away and reapplying paint until he was satisfied. Left visible are schematic lines and erasures that trace the artist’s process and suggest underlying geometric or architectonic structures.
