Label TextRendered in elemental forms and bold colors, two figures commune in the act of making tortillas. Jean Charlot often returned to the subjects of mother and child and tortilla makers. From his early years in France, Charlot showed interest in folk art and liturgical imagery due to the symbolic potential of recognizable forms and themes. During the 1920s and 1930s, Charlot lived in Mexico City and became immersed in Mesoamerican culture and a vibrant circle of artists and intellectuals. (Lana Meador, 2020) Charlot's interest in Mexican folklore is evident when viewing his work. He captures the tenderness along with a sense of strength and dignity in his depictions of everyday scenes of people performing ordinary tasks. (Gallery Label)
