Label TextInspired by stylized figures on Maya monuments, Jean Charlot created several works like this one that feature the archetypal image of a cargador (burden bearer), or builder. Charlot moved from his native Paris, France, to Mexico in 1921 and worked from 1926 to 1929 as a draftsman on the archaeological excavation of the Maya site at Chichén Itza, Yucatán. Charlot became associated with Diego Rivera and the Mexican muralist movement, which explored the country’s Indigenous and popular art traditions.

Inspirado en las figuras estilizadas de los monumentos mayas, Jean Charlot creó varias obras como ésta que presentan la imagen arquetípica de un cargador de piedra o un constructor de pirámides. Charlot se mudó de Paris, su ciudad natal, a México en 1921 y trabajó desde 1926 hasta 1929 como dibujante en la excavación arqueológica del sitio maya de Chichén Itzá, Yucatán. Charlot se asoció con Diego Rivera y el movimiento muralista mexicano, que exploró las tradiciones de arte indígena y popular del país en su trabajo.
