Diego Rivera arrived in Russia in 1927 as a member of the official Mexican delegation of the Anti-Imperialist League of the Americas; he had been invited to Moscow to participate in the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution. The abundance of red flags and banners seen in this painting impressed him as he watched the Russian National Military Forces file through Moscow's Red Square. Rivera had also been commissioned to paint a large fresco in the Red Army Building, for which he completed forty-five watercolor sketches and innumerable pencil drawings. He never finished the Red Army mural, leaving Moscow in the spring of 1928.
