Prior to colonization, warfare was infrequent among Indigenous Australians. When conflicts did occur, small decorated clubs like this were used. Although there was a great diversity of cultures and over 250 languages spoken on the continent, factors ranging from expansive geography to enduring reverence for the land and sacred sites mitigated widespread conflict over territory.
