Ancient Chinese bronze vessels were cast using a unique process employing several ceramic piece molds. In this technique, ceramic molds carved with complicated multi-layered designs were assembled around an interior clay core. Molten bronze was poured into the thin space left between the mold and the core. After the bronze cooled and hardened, the molds were broken to reveal the cast vessel. Final chiseling and polishing were the last steps in the manufacturing of these remarkable objects.
