This fragment of a mosaic panel preserves a woman riding an animal that appears to be a leopard. She wears a sun hat and holds a fan. When complete the mosaic may have depicted a mythological scene, perhaps a procession. This fragment attests the remarkable skill of late Hellenistic mosaicists: some of the tesserae are only millimeters wide. The mosaicist has effectively captured the play of light on the leopard’s coat and in the folds of the woman’s garments. (Jessica Powers 2008)
