Like dragon robes for adults, this small jacket is lavishly decorated with gold five-claw dragons and phoenixes. Other images with auspicious meanings in Chinese culture—bats, flowering plants, and fruits—are also embroidered on the jacket. This dress was likely for a boy of a noble family to wear on a formal occasion. During the Qing dynasty, children’s formal garments were treated like miniature replicas of those for adults, however, embroidered images, particularly animals, were rendered with humor to make the garments suitable for children.
