Label Text
A large-scale, multi-figure court scene was probably the composition from which this fragment derives. On the upper register, two legs and feet overlap to show their owners lined up side by side, as is also true of the heads below. This artistic convention, often employed during the Amarna Period, was intended to suggest depth in compositions not based on optical perspective (a device first used consistently in ancient Greek art). Interestingly, the tall shields of the soldiers below break the register line. (Gallery Label, 8/2002).
