DescriptionA collage of various abstract compositions. The upper register is black-and-white with a central image of writing on a piece of paper. The lower register is largely a black ground. There are two colorful abstract compositions on the left-hand side and letter stencils at center that read “D-O-T.”Label Text"Each person comes at my work as themselves and bring their own experiences to it...People see what they want to see. I’ve painted gumdrops that some people thought were bullets...." —Raymond Saunders
Among layers of abstract forms, is an image of a small licorice gumdrop. Raymond Saunders’s collages explore the associations that can be found in shifting relationships between form, image, and text. While his use of found objects—some collaged directly onto the work, others recreated from memory—could suggest a narrative, Saunders denies any fixed meaning and instead prefers an open reading of his work.
